On both sides of the skullcap is depicted the symbol of the former “Most Serene” Republic: the deep red banner bearing the winged lion of St. Mark holding an open book. The banner is depicted as if moved by a breeze, and its side panels extend to the back, wrapping around the head. Two gold lines extend from the nape of the neck toward the forehead, framing the word“INDEPENDENT”in the same color.
